IBM Layoffs: Tech Giant Announces Job Cuts From Two Divisions During a Seven-Minute Meeting

<p>This year, IBM has joined the ranks of the computer industry’s layoffs once again. The company said that it will be laying off staff from its marketing and communications departments, but it did not specify how many.</p>

<p>It has been claimed that IBM made layoffs in its marketing and communications departments. In a seven-minute meeting with the department’s staff, IBM Chief Communications Officer Jonathan Adashek announced the department’s intention to lay off personnel. Although IBM did not formally announce the layoffs, CNBC reported them citing anonymous sources.</p>
<p>This coincides with remarks made by IBM CEO Arvind Krishna last year that the business plans to stop recruiting for positions that artificial intelligence (AI) may eventually replace. According to Arvind Krishna, recruiting in back-office departments like human resources would either stop entirely or slow down. “Over a five-year period, I could easily see 30% of that getting replaced by AI and automation,” he said.</p>
<p>According to the layoffs.fyi website, at least 204 organizations, including IBM, have declared job losses in 2024. 49,978 workers have been impacted by these layoffs.</p>
<p><strong>Plan for IBM’s Restructuring</strong><br />
James Kavanaugh, the Chief Financial Officer of IBM, said in January that the corporation is probably going to spend the same $400 million on restructuring as it did the previous year, when it cut around 3,900 positions.</p>
<p>According to the article, IBM asked its staff members whether they would want to opt for voluntary redundancy and lead layoffs that would mostly affect jobs in Europe. Eighty percent of the reduction objective goes into Enterprise Operations & Support (EO&S), Q2C missions, and Finance & Operations. IBM’s approach is seen as “transformative” rather than financial.</p>
