’20 Days in Mariupol,’ directed by Mstyslav Chernov, a war journalist and Ukrainian filmmaker, is a startling first-hand narrative of the early stages of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

In an impassioned statement accepting his prize, Chernov called on Russia to stop its assault against his nation and expressed his desire that he had not had to shoot the movie at all.

“I’m honored to have won the first Oscar in Ukrainian history. I’m quite sure I’ll be the first director here to state that I wish this movie had never been created. In return, I would want Russia to never invade Ukraine. All the hostages, all the troops defending their home, and all the citizens imprisoned there should be released.

“We can guarantee that the truth will win out, that the people of Mariupol and those who have sacrificed their lives will never be forgotten, and that the historical record is corrected. The director, who also provides the narration for the documentary, said, “Because memories are formed by cinema, and history is formed by memories.”

After Russia started its invasion of Ukraine, Chernov and his colleagues were besieged in Mariupol for 20 days. Along with the Frontline and Associated Press teams, the filmmaker assembled video that he shot in Mariupol (AP).

“20 Days in Mariupol” won the Sundance World Cinema Documentary Competition and had its international debut at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival. Additionally, it served as Ukraine’s official submission for the 96th Academy Awards’ best foreign feature picture category.

Directed by Toronto-based, Emmy-nominated director Nisha Pahuja, who was born in Delhi, “To Kill a Tiger” is a Canadian production. At the Toronto International Film Festival in 2022, it had its international debut and took home the Amplify Voices Award for Best Canadian Feature Film.

The movie chronicles Ranjit’s difficult quest for justice on behalf of his 13-year-old daughter, who was kidnapped and then sexually abused by three men.

“The males are taken into custody when Ranjit goes to the police. Ranjit is relieved, but only temporarily, as the villagers and their leaders begin a persistent campaign to pressure the family to back down from the accusations. “A cinematic documentary, ‘To Kill a Tiger’ chronicles Ranjit’s arduous quest for justice for his child,” the film’s official website states.

Notice Pictures Inc. and the National Film Board (NFB) of Canada are co-producing the movie. David Oppenheim of the NFB, Pahuja under Notice Pictures Inc., and Cornelia Principe produced the movie.

Actors Dev Patel, Mindy Kaling, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, poet Rupi Kaur from Canada, and physician and best-selling author Atul Gawande executive produce “To Kill a Tiger.”

It debuted on Netflix a few hours before to the Oscars.

India made history at the Academy Awards last year when “Naatu Naatu,” the upbeat song from the movie “RRR,” won best original song and “The Elephant Whisperers” took home the best documentary short documentary prize. For the first time ever, two films produced in India won the top honor in the film industry.
