On Tuesday, Ravichandran Ashwin referred to the Test match against England in 2012 as the pivotal moment in his remarkable career, saying that the humiliating series loss at home enabled him to “correct” his mistakes.

In the 2012 series, England came back to win 2-1—their first in India since 1984–85.

The pivotal moment in my life came during the 2012 series against England. On the eve of his 100th Test match, Ashwin remarked at a press conference, “It taught me what to correct in my game.”

When he takes the field for the fifth and final Test match against England, which begins here on Thursday, the 37-year-old will have achieved the milestone.

“It’s a pretty big occasion,” Ashwin said in reference to the milestone. The voyage itself has been extraordinarily amazing, more so than the goal. It has no bearing on how you prepare for this game. We need to win this test match.

He was questioned about his finest performance to date when addressing the media.

“In Birmingham, 2018–19 has to rank among my best runs in Test cricket,” he said.

During that Test, Ashwin claimed seven wickets, including crucial ones from England’s run machine, Alastair Cook, and Joe Root.

Ashwin made his Test debut in 2011 and has seen more highs than lows throughout the course of a 13-year career. He recently became only the second Indian after Anil Kumble to reach 500 wickets in the longest version of the game.

In the current series, India has already taken an insurmountable 3-1 lead.
